| THE MAMMALS |
JAGUARS are the largest of the felines after the lion and tiger and can present a great threat if you aren't careful. Unlike other cats, it enjoys a good swim and though it prefers the cover of the forest, it has been known to wander. While they will feast on smaller creatures, they prefer big game. If it came to flight or fight against one of these spotted cats, you can bet you should fly. |
PUMAS are notorious "stalk-and-ambush" felines. Their typical diet consists of big game, much like their spotted cousins. While a puma may look like a house cat, they are anything but. They can be about the same size as a human which means you definitely don't want to catch this big cat's eye. Not when you'd make such a splendid dinner. |
ANTEATERS are pretty little things with noses suited for scoping our their prey. They feast mainly on ants and termites. They are quite unusual with their long bushy tails and intricately patterned bodies. Still, pretty as they may be, they prefer solitude. Watch out for those claws. They aren't just for catching insects and when a treat is immenent, while they prefer to run, they'll put up a decent fight. |
ARMADILLOS are named for the Spanish word which means "little armored one." It's fitting as their bodies are protected by a hard armor that protects them from the dangers around them. They'll run when threatened typically but you might get lucky and see one of them roll into a little ball. |
CAPYBARAS are pack animals much like our beloved equines. They live in groups of typicall ten to thirty but larger have been found. Like an equine, when a female is going to give birth she'll leave the group to do so in private and return in a few hours time. They are skilled swimmers, despite the danger. |
MONKEYS are often found lounging in the trees particularly spidar, howling and wooly tailed varieties. They aren't likely to cause much trouble for a horse unless they are feeling particularly naughty. Howler monkies often live in groups very similar to horse bands with one male presiding over a harem of females. |
PORCUPINES are another type of rodent found throughout Lucigo, unique as they possess sharp quills upon their bodies mixed in with undercoat and hair. They can't shoot them but bumping into one of these little things might just leave you in pain with a muzzle full of quills. |
MARAS are a different sort of rodent. Looking like a cross between the squirrel and a rabbit, they aren't notoriously social. They breed for life which separates them from many of the other species present on Lucigo. They are quick little things and can leap up to six feet if need be. |
TAPIRS are short little pig-like creatures that share ancestors with the common horse and oddly enough the rhino. They are large enough to keep them from having too many natural predators. In addition, these little guys have very tough skin on the back of their neck which keeps the big cats at bay. |
DEER populate Lucigo but they shake things up a bit. They prefer to live near arears with at least half a meter of water. They are avid and gifted swimmers and stick towards marshy areas which provide natural protection from their predators, most importantly the big cats of the region. |
OTTERS might be rather adorable but they are also very vocal creatures. The otters of Lucigo tend to live in groups and depend heavily upon this verbal communication to alert the others of possible danger as well as simple social interaction. While they mostly feed on fish, if it isn't available they've been known to go after young caiman and even anacondas. |
SLOTHS are known for their interesting little faces and their inacivity amongst other things. They are typically considered as one of the heavier sleepers in the animal world and only come down from their perches to do their business at least once a week. They only have their claws to depend on for defence but their natural coats keep them pretty well hidden. |
BATS are the only mammals that are truly capable of flight. While most rely solely on insects and foliage, on Lucigo there are species that do in fact rely on the blood of others to sustain them. A female vampire bat can consume over an ounce of blood in twenty minutes. They are that hardcore. |
OCELOTS are named from the Nahuatl word and tend to roam in large numbers throughout Lucigo. They look like a normal house cat with a coat similar to their larger Jaguar cousins. While they are smaller than some of the other cats on the island, they have been known to go after smaller mammals so you might want to keep an eye on your foals. |
| THE BIRDS |
MACAWS are violently bright birds that frequent Lucigo. Their bright coats makes them great distractions to all that happen to catch one in their line of vision. |
QUETZALS are birds that borrow their names from another Nahuatl word making them by far, more common in the area than most. Most commonly seen are Eared Quetzals which tend to feed on incests and small vertebates in addition to fruit. They catch much of their food while hovering. |
TOUCANS are colorful birds known for their long beaks. They make their nests inside of trees, reeping the benefits of a woodpecker's hard work. They do not migrate and are usually found in pairs or small groups. |
OWLS of all sorts are found throughout Lucigo but the most common is the Burrowing Owl. They call burrows their home and unlike most others, are very active during the day, with the exception of the middle of the day when the heat is the worst. |
STORKS are abundant in Lucigo and not just to bring you your young. They tend to stick towards drier areas unlike their similar cousins. Their long legs give you something interesting to look at should you happen to catch one near the water's edge. |
HAWKS are generally birds of prey, knowen for their keen hunting abilities. Red-tailed Hawks tend to be predominant in the Lucigo region. At another time, the birds feather were thought to be sacred and were used in a great many ceremonies. Seeing a Red-tailed Hawk today is a sign of good luck. |
PARROTS are another colorful bird that calls Lucigo home. They are considered to be some of the most intelligent birds and can even learn to imitate human speech. |
HUMMINGBIRDS are curious little birds, known for their rapid wing movement and long bills that are used to dip into flowers. They are not typically problematic but like all things, they can have wicked tempers. |
| THE AMPHIBIANS & REPTILES |
CROCODILES are dangerous predators. They are very fast, much faster than you could think and grab their prey by latching on and tearing in. They are ambush hunters which can make the shores a bit dangerous depending on when the crocodiles have last eaten. |
BOAS are heavy bodied snakes that can grow to be as long as thirteen feet. Like their names say, they will ambush their pra with a bite before wrapping around it until it dies. It will then swallow it whole. While they tend to prefer rodents and birds, they may also go after mammals as big as an ocelot. |
BLACK CAIMANS are one of the largest reptiles and the biggest alligator you'll find. In rare cases they can be longer than 5 meters (16.5 ft) so look out. Their dark bodies provide them perfect camo while hunting at night. Watch those legs kids. Also, keep in mind, when one of these bad boys are fully grown, they have no natural predators. |
POISON DART FROGS are active during the day which shouldn't be any trouble, you can't miss them. With their bright little bodies, the last thing they want to do is blend in. Exercise caution. They produce a poison through their skin so this is one tiny little thing that you need to look at but definitely not touch. |
TURTLES of all sizes live within Lucigo's land and seas. Sea turtles prove to be particularly interesting as the female will crawl onto the shore and build a nest, depositing her eggs before returning to the water. Their shells provide natural protection from predators. |
KINGSNAKES are often confused with the highly venomous coral snakes which differ in color. They tend to be opportunists and will eat whatever comes upon them, using constriction as their method of choice. They will also eat other snakes as they tend to be immune to other venomous creatures. |
| THE MARINE LIFE |
PIRANHAS are dangerous creatures though they may have a bad reputation. While they are known to hunt in schools, it has been hypothesized that it is simply as they are fearful creatures, like most other fish and prefer the safety in numbers. They do have an appetite for meat so what where you wade. |
ELECTRIC EELS are infact not true eels though their bodies may resemble them. As their names state, they do possess an electric current that they may use to defend themselves or to attack their prey. They are apex predators and do not have any natural predators that threaten them. |
WHALES around Lucigo's coasts come in all different sizes and with very different characteristics. Should you be able to wade out further, both orcas and sperm whales frequent the waters, hunting squid and in some cases, other whales. |
DOLPHINS do not pose much of a threat to the equine population of Lucigo but the chance to catch one thriving in its natural habitat is not something to be taken lightly. Their sleek bodies ride the waves better than any surfer ever could. |
